SUN - Business Case

Major university migrates to Sun Solaris for production and distributed printing
A major university and long time VPS user was migrating key financial and administration applications from the mainframe to PeopleSoft applications (using 45 UNIX app servers). They selected VPSX as their print management solution to run on the Sun Solaris environment.

With a scalable, comprehensive Output Management Open Systems solution, the university staff could manage their new PeopleSoft financial and administrative application output with far less administrative overhead. They print to Xerox and Canon 75-ppm printers as well as around 400 more distributed printers, without need for proprietary print drivers or other components dependant on the operating system version. As the complexity of printers and servers in the network increases, the effort to manage the print environment does not.

As a migration from the mainframe, the customer negotiated use of both their VPS and new VPSX solutions during their migration period. Implementing VPSX allowed the university to recover various hardware components, streamline printer definition, enhance supportability of a variety of printer brands and models, and provide a more reliable, secure print environment for their UNIX-based application output.
