SAPI Support
SAPI is a multitasking interface to JES that offers many opportunities for performance improvements, and the internal structure of VPS has been redesigned to take advantage of SAPI features. VPS will continue to support the Process SYSOUT (PSO) interface; SAPI is not required for using VPS V1 R8.0.
SAPI provides additional job and dataset information not available via PSO, allowing VPS operations to be streamlined and easier to use. By taking advantage of the newly available job and dataset information, VPS cross memory access to JES via user exits is greatly reduced, and in most situations there is little need for VPS to access JES control blocks. This allows VPS to be more independent of new JES releases.
When using SAPI, JES will mark SYSOUT as active when it is being processed by VPS. Display of queued output will show the dataset as active and prevent deletion or other manipulation of the dataset while it is being processed by VPS.
Customers choosing to utilize SAPI will find improved VPS performance and usability. Utilizing SAPI eliminates the need for VPS to stage print files during processing in most situations and also eliminates the need for specific user exits.
