LRSSports Hometown Coach Named NFHS Coaches Association's Coach of the Year
April 30, 2007 - (Springfield, IL) – LRSSports would like to congratulate our home town coach, Sacred Heart-Griffin (SHG) High School's own Ken Leonard, on being named the National Federation of State High School (NFHS) Coaches Association's Coach of the Year for Football.
Coach Leonard was nominated after the winning the second straight Class 5A state title, finishing off a regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. In his 23 seasons coaching at SHG, Coach Leonard had two state championships, four title-game appearances, and his record with the Cyclones is 215-48. Combine those numbers with his record at Gridley, his total career record is 247-57. This record places him in the top 10 winningest coaches in Illinois state history.
Criteria for nominations included basic philosophy of athletics, involvement in the professional at the all levels from local to national, community service, participation in other activities at the school, and, of course, career coaching record.
The NFHS is a professional coaching organization which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982 and each year honors the top 10 girls and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers) and in other "other" category that is not included in these categories.
