The engineer would be a part of the engineering group and is expected to identify solutions to enable the business. The hands-on duties and day to day maintenance are performed by another group; the engineering group is more strategic and spends time researching solutions and then documenting how it is to be placed into their environment. This may include working out procedures in a lab environment, writing the support documentation or the implementation and maintenance plans and then handing off to the other teams.
The engineer in this role would be responsible for responding to business needs and providing a technical solution to enable them to move forward. This will include:
•Identifying business challenges and researching solutions
•Documenting associated risks
•Developing proposals and eventually designing a solution. These solutions may be on a variety of subjects which could include but not be limited to:
Expanding network capacity in a way that is flexible and robust.
Providing visibility into data flow and how applications are behaving so that network traffic can be optimized or server to server latency can be reduced.
Identifying critical path or dependencies within the network and work with the disaster recovery team to develop procedures to test.
Finding ways to more quickly on-board outsourced resources and remote access users in a secure fashion (i.e. how to provision users faster, ensuring the client’s intellectual property is secure, how to authenticate non-company assets accessing the client’s resources from the Internet, how to audit for compliance to company security policies, how to gain visibility and track what users are doing, how to move beyond being reactive in the client’s security and be more proactive while not standing in the way of a business that requires a highly collaborative environment.)
